I’m not sure what year it implemented headlights turning off with the ignition but given it’ s Volvo I suspect quite early. I’ve always run my car with the headlights on. Even if I had daytime running lights I’d run with my headlights on. Because w hy not?

Over the weekend I had a headlight go out. Always thinking, I decided to run the parking lights instead. Not thinking, I didn’t turn them off when I parked it Saturday.

This morning the battery was dead-dead. Not- a- click dead. A boost from a neighbor and 2 hours later I’m good to go. An i dling car is not an efficient battery charger but it’s efficient enough.

Like you, I also always drive with my lights on. Here in Florida, we often get the “ mirage effect” on hot roads (light is distorted above a hot road, making the area look shiny, or like floating water ). On many occasions, I have noticed that cars, only a short distance away, are very difficult or impossible to see. This especially occurs with dark gray cars, or cars that are a similar color to the road surface . Having the lights turned on helps cut through the mirage.

I fail to understand why DRLs aren’t just headlights on all the time. Bulb life? Not buying it. And the argument that they aren’t effective or necessary is poppycock.

Hah! On our Volvo’s there isn’t even the option for no lights—it’s “0” which has the headlights on, the running lights, then on. Very annoying that the running lights aren’t automatic off, though I understand that they’re supposed to be parking lamps as well if you’re stranded  on the side of the road thus they stay on when the car is off. Many a time have I put the lights in running mode and had to go back to switch them off; I’ve since given up and just use the on setting.
